eZi Test Chinese app for iPhone and iPad

eZi Test helps you learn Mandarin Chinese characters and words, based on the HSK and Unicode, in English, Deutsch, française, española. Unlike other apps that force you into a training program, eZi Test puts YOU in control of what you learn. You select the characters and the order - essential if you are following a particular syllabus or using a book. eZi Test is genuinely totally free, no registration needed, no in-app purchases or upgrades. eZi Test comes with all the characters and words for HSK levels 1-4, and a set for readers of "Learning Chinese Characters" by Matthews. Characters / words are in packs of "cards" with English, Mandarin (Hanyu Pinyin), Simplified and Traditional Chinese characters and pictures. Run a "cardshow" to view some text or pictures from the card and then after a pause the remaining hidden items (automatic flashcards).

You can download extra cardsets from the internet directly onto the iPhone / iPod / iPad, including example text. Import your own characters from text files, and export cardsets to text files. Create your own sets, shuffle card order, merge sets, change the text on cards, add pictures from the internet or your camera, and swap cardsets with pictures between your iPad/iPhone using iTunes.

Use flashcard-style or MCQ-style tests, at your own pace or against the clock. The app saves your correct / incorrect scores, allows you to test against cards with certain scores, or using a "Leitner-style" prioritisation of cards. Track your scores graphically and set targets for learning by set dates.

On the iPad play a version of "Mahjong Solitaire" to match tiles by meaning. On all devices play a memory matching game "Flip" where you match cards in pairs from a deck, or "Scramble" where you have to select the correct English meaning from 10 choices against the clock to win points and earn medals (sign-in to Game Center to publish your scores and compete with friends).

Practice writing characters, and quickly learn correct stroke order. No more waiting for tedious stroke-order animations to work through! With the unique colour-coded strokes system (in this version for HSK Level 1) you can write a character and check the order in seconds.

Sort characters and words by Pinyin, English, difficulty etc. Select groups of characters to create lessons, allowing learning in manageable chunks. Delete, merge and save sets of characters. View dictionary-style data on radical, stroke count etc. (based on Unicode), and add your own notes. Lookup definitions on internet dictionaries such as Dict.cn, iciba, CEDICT etc. (network connection required) using the built-in bookmarks, and swap your own bookmarks between devices.
